Well, I just spent a little time crawling around my floor laying out the surcote on the dark lilac wool. It seems that with my layout, I get approximately 1.25 metres of fabric left for sleeves with body panels and gores cut out. I should have no problem doing that. In fact, if I lay out the sleeves at right angles to the "grain" then I'm left with a piece 80 x 150 cm out of which I could squeeze a couple of extra gores, also at right angles.

Doing so with the sleeves would mean that the tippets should only reach my palms, no further, which would keep it practical.

Thus far, I've only chalked the pattern pieces, nothing is cut, because I'm still not convinced, and I'm afraid of screwing it all up.

OK, so I cut into my wool. Still afraid it's all wrong, but it was delightful the way my scissors cut through the fabric.
