Well, it turns out I don't need an awl nor a leather needle to sew thought this leather. It's not very thick, and with thimbles on ring finger and thumb I can use my sewing hand without much adjustment to push through my two needles. I did the first seam, joining the lid to the back piece (as being the shortest seam to sew) using a double running stitch, starting with a single thread and two needles - one at either end of the thread. Worked like a charm, even if I did accidentally push the needles slightly crookedly a few times. It didn't take too long either.

What I need now is a lot of luck to get the spacer strip to align properly to both front and back piece. I've considered marking off a few strategic points to help with that, but we'll see. I took a few shots and posted them in my gallery.
