Sewing circle today, missing two people who had originally planned on showing up. They were struck down with a cold, and opted for resting up this weekend as next they are going off to an event. More's the pity, although the rest of us had an abundance of cake to gobble for our tea-break.

I managed to bring requisite equipment to try on my Florentine bodice and it will fit me. It's just a matter of getting the shoulder straps short enough so that the entire thing sits at the height required.

I also discovered one annoying, very annoying, mistake: I did not measure the top of the front skirt panel against the front length of my bodice, and I should have. I definitely should have. I of course had to try on the skirt over my bodice just for fun. Although the waistline is not yet finished on it it was quite easy to see that I am missing about two inches on either side and the front panel of the skirt ends way before the front half of the bodice does. This means that I will have to use all my ingenuity to get the front panel to stretch as far as it can, and then make sure that the back panel is left loose far enough that with a hook and eye I can bridge the gap smoothly.

I am not looking forward to that piece of engineering, but it can be done, of that I am convinced. This new bodice pattern is so radically different from my standard bodice that I should have altered the skirt pattern to fit. I didn't. It is a first outfit, though, so I guess I should have counted on something going wrong. Still, if only I'd checked. *sigh*

More pleasingly, it was suggested to me that a simple line of velvet would work beautifully as trim and decoration for this gown, and I looked at my bodice and went "Hmmm... yeeesss... precious." My plan was to keep it fairly simple; I think the fabric looks smashing all on its own, but maybe a narrow velvet trim would give it just that extra bit of understated flashiness I so like. I could use the same strip for the vertical decorations on the sleeves (which I've not thought through yet).

We also encouraged our local newcomer to try her hand at slightly more advanced sewing. She's used to making munane clothes, but haven't made historical costumes much. She is not that amused by her current minimal wardrobe of tunics, she wants to be a pretty princess, and we helped her make a corset pattern at todays's sewing circle.
