I believe the SCA is made when the people who inhabit our common spirit gather together. Of course this common spirit is diverse, not everyone sees it the same way, nor approach it in similar terms. At the start, it is a social club. We gather, we create, we learn, we teach, we share and we let our joy show.
The ability to take pride in joy without dissembling is wonderful and rare, and has brought me many happy moments.
The club has ideals, nobody achieves them, but through striving we can become better. We are encouraged to do better. We are socialised to work towards this.
Through the people, their example, and many words of wisdom in our club I have learned to be a better person. I have learned to be a more loving person. I have learned to lower my defenses, because it can be worth it. I have practised diplomacy, my ability for compassion has grown, because I have met so many different kinds of people.
This is not necessarily unique to the SCA, but the combination of crafts, knowledge and this ideal makes it special to me.
Through it I also met Jonas, who is a much better person than I am, and who inspires me every day to be better.
If you see me sitting down at an event with some crafts in the future, feel free to join me, and ask about it, or just sit in companionable silence, I would welcome it.
