Sometimes even the newbie does good
2005-07-20 11:30 pmSometimes I am quite pleased with my own efforts. For example using the green silk thread (pulled from the fabric) and hemstitching as per
myladyswardrobe's description in a comment I started at the sleevehead and invisibly stuck the folded over wool to the lining on the inside.
My stitches were perfect, nary a thread was visible. OK, once or twice when I got insecure about how much I actually needed to catch of the wool to be sure it was stuck down you can see about 1 mm of thread. It was, however, quite time-consuming makig sure I didn't go through to the outside, I got enough of the seam allowance and came out at the right place, so when the green thread I was working with ran out I started anew with black silk instead. That worked just as well, only the black thread is basically invisible against the wool so I could afford the luxury of working with slightly larger margins and the speed picked up a bit.
I have only done the sleevehead and around the bottom curve to a little before the silk starts before I got antsy so I put my sleeves away and have since cleaned up, packed stuff for the trip north and taken a refreshing shower. Left to do is make sure I got everything I wanted with me, pay the rent (almost forgot!) and then go to sleep at a reasonable hour (read: not 2 am like last night!). I've put the sleeves in my backpack to work on while travelling - not that there is lots and lots of time when you fly north, first a 40 minute bus ride, then waiting in the terminal, about 40 mins. Finally the flight takes about 1 hour and ten minutes as compared to the train which is 13 hours, but it's an over-night train.
I won't be entirely offline up north of course, and I am bringing the ropa and the gothic army dress to finish while I am there, so look for a couple of updates.

Date: 2005-07-22 03:16 pm (UTC)Not quite as fun to put on the half-finished ropa and have both her AND younger brother tell me "where's the magic wand and the big pointy hat?" - Bah! Can't appreciate proper clothes I tell ya... :)

My grandmother once made me a lovely tweedy deep green skirt. She hand sewed the waist band down and used this stitch. I needed to alter the skirt so it wasn't so huge on me but I had serious difficulties in unpicking that stitch! It was totally invisible!
