Getting crafty again
2005-08-15 09:22 pmWell, meeting up with
ermingard in downtown Visby on Saturday showing off a couple of pieces of leather meant for a pouch apparently sparked something in my mind, because today I've cut one out.
It all started with me putting away the rest of my stuff, washing my dishes, and cutlery. The cutlery reminded me of a small cut of leather I bought last year at Visby meaning to make a practical sheath for my spoon/knife/pokey-stick combo. I never got around to it obviously.
Anyway, I thought about that piece of leather, and took it out, trying to lay out all of my cutlery on it in a logical way. I wasn't pleased with the result so then I put the cutlery away and started thinking about pouches. Leather pouches. A leather pouch. The two-lobed leather pouch kind. Like this image, or this page shows*. I pulled out a pad and paper and drew an outline on it. Then I thought to make it practical so I put my cellphone on the outline to check if it would fit. Sweet, it did. Then I thought a step further - how often do I bring the cell with me while out in garb? Rarely. How often do I bring the camera with me while in garb? Nearly always. I put the phone away and brought out the camera. Not quite big enough, so I adjusted the pattern, decided on a spacer (5 cm wide strip) and a lid at about three centimetres extra. I then cut these pieces out of paper and laid them out on the leather I had. Perfect! It was just big enough not to have to do a join in the spacer-strip! So I traced around my pattern with my bone stylus, cut the pieces out with a regular pair of scissors and I am now admiring this stage.
I'm pondering whether or not I should use glue along my seams, or if waxed linen thread is enough. I am also pondering whether or not my regular needles will cut it. The leather I have is not very thick, and quite flexible, but still, it's leather and regular needles aren't made for it. As for the glue - the only kind I have at home is contact adhesive which needs to dry a bit before applying and I'm not 100% sure I can get that to stick properly on a first try. Or if it will work on leather.
I am also still pondering closing options. I think I'll add two carrying loops to it though - you want that stability with a precious camera inside. I'll make the seams exposed - don't want to bother with turning it. If I feel ambitious at the end I might even line the thing with linen or something. That'd be cool I think. I'll also see what I can do about adding a small pocket for the SD card reader which I use to transfer pictures. Or for other small, useful things.
ETA: * According to PhilFraser.com this is called a kidney or 'bollock' pouch. Sounds about right to me. I don't have any metal mounts for it, but I could easily add those at a later date.
