Planning ahead
2005-10-02 01:31 pmWhile I couldn't go to Civil War this weekend I am going to Crown Tourney next weekend. Partly because it's put on by my shire in cooperation with another shire, partly because it is closer. I still don't have transportation there, but I'm hoping that will work itself out. Things usually do.
In order to be ready for the event though I need to think about what I want to bring. I want to wear my ropa, which means it needs to be finished. At present I have stitched down the lining up against the front edge on the hook side of the front closing. I'm working on invisibly stitching down the seam allowance on the other side and then I will attach the front lining on the hook side. That isn't a difficult task at all, and shouldn't take more than an hour or two. Then I need to hem it. In order to hem the ropa I need to try it on over my farthingale. Now, in order that my farthingale sits where it should I need to wear my corset - which needs an extra pair of hands to get into. I'll have to do that one of the nights in the coming week.
Now, to wear the ropa I need the appropriate things on underneath. Right now, that means the doublet bodice kirtle (the db kirtle) as the only thing fancy enough I can wear underneath the ropa. Yes, the Tudor court gown is fancy enough, but there is not a chance in hell the fur sleeves will fit inside the ropa's round sleeves, and, more importantly, no indication that a ropa was ever worn over such a garment. Then there's the working class kirtle, which gets disqualified on account of the working class title. It has no ornamentation and just doesn't mesh properly. I could wear the working class kirtle with a doublet on top, but that means I would need to finish the brown test doublet. I'm not sure I'm far enough along on that project to make this a viable option.
So, db kirtle it is. Which means I need my shirt in a wearable state to go underneath that. The sleeves are completely finished and stitched down, but the neck-ruff is not. It's a pain in the ass to pleat a ruff let me tell ya. Unfortunately it's not one of those small simple tasks (like blackwork) that I can zone out to and keep on for hours with. In short, not sure if I'll get the ruff up and running well enough to finish the shirt finally. *sigh*
Now, I've been pondering the outfit for a bit. I have some variability with the db kirtle. Sleeves or no, forepart skirt, headgear, jewelery. I was pondering going with something simpler on Friday, maybe the gothic army dress if I can finish it, then on Saturday I can put on the db kirtle with the green petticoat underneath, and the coif ontop. Since the tourney is outside I can then wear the ropa for warmth. Not sure if I want the sleeves or not, depends how cold it is I suppose. Then at night for court and feast, which is indoors I can maybe slip on the farthingale and wear the red brocade forepart skirt ontop of that and lace in the sleeves if I haven't already. I can add a strand of pearls, my brooch and flat cap with feather in. It'll be way too warm to wear the ropa indoors for court and feast anyway. It means I'll have to try out the farthingale underneath the db kirtle beforehand to see if it works, but, it may well. How's that sound for a plan?
If at all possible I'd also like to get the commissioned scroll done, but, I'm not banking on it.
ETA: Well, I tried on the db kirtle and farthingale get-up just now. Felt good and I startled two people in my dorm when I asked them to check if the petticoat or farthingale was visible under the overskirt. It wasn't - it works! It woooorks! Yes, my plan is coming together nicely. I also noticed I -seriously- need to iron the kirtle and petticoats.

Date: 2005-10-02 08:23 pm (UTC)I think just asking them to check if they could see my petticoats was wierd enough, so I just played it safe and didn't wierd them out more than necessary.
