I actually got quite a bit done on my bliaut project today. Gores are attached, with a boo-boo on the flat felling on the side-gores which I will simply ignore, and say it was meant to be that way. The sleeves I also shaped a bit, but being me, overdid it and took away a little too much for the wrist-width. It is a bit of a squeeze to get through there now, but I am hoping that I will be able to wear my first chemise with it, the one with the overlong sleeves.
I also attached the sleeves, with pendants and small gussets for under the arm, to the body piece, which I self-lined in the torso and finished the slit-V neckline of with the self-lining like a big interfacing. I also shaped the torso to enable me to pull it tight to achieve the rucking effect. This is essential since I cut it twice as long as my body is, so if I don't get it to ruck and stay up I will be stepping on the hem alot and we do not want that.
I have prepared the torso for the same "cheat" that Kerry and I used for my red dress, that is, a panel of fabric in the space where the laces will go at the side, for modesty and growth if needed. Again being me, I may have cut it a bit narrow, so this is quite likely needed. So far I have only closed up from underneath my left arm and out to the sleeve, and the pendant looks just right, minus some sewing esthetics right at the tricky tight turning bits - flat felling those seams are always a bit of a pain.
I also haven't decided about decoration. I don't think I want to just leave it plain, but I like my first tablet weaving better on the fabric, but that piece lacks about 5 cm on either end to go all the way around my neckline. The second attempt is plenty long enough, but it doesn't match as well as the first I think. I may end up stitching the first band down around the neck, ignoring that it doesn't go around the back completely, and use the second one as a belt. It is definately not long enough to be used as trim around the sleeves, not two of them at any rate.
It is coming along a treat though, which is nice to see. Though if I leave the edges of this fabric free for more than a minute they start to unravel in wispy threads, but if I am sewing along a straight seam, the fabric folds down Very obediently and I rarely have to resort to pins. Of course that is very un-true when it comes to doing the bias edges as they stretch enormously if not pinned to death.
Plus the machine I am borrowing has a problem with the tension of the thread - the underside most of the time looks horrid - but I am ignoring the ugliness as well. This is some kind of man-made fabric so I am not wasting energy or time handsewing what can be done on the machine.
