I decided to pull myself together, somewhat, today and put together the text and pictures for the latest AoA scroll I made for Double Wars this year. It's only been two months, but my site is now updated with a brand spanking new page. Huzzah!

Fur?

Doing some more surfing I came to the Realm of Venus website which lists resources for Venetian loose gowns, and she points out that many of them were fur-lined, as supported by the images. This makes me ponder fur-lining my own ropa. I don't have enough to fur-line the entire thing, but I have one thigh-length mink coat, and the upper part of another as long mink coat, two sleeves still attached (I used the "skirt" on this one for the Tudor court gown turn-backs if you remember).

So, definately not enough for an entire fur-lining, but I could fur-line the sleeves, and collar and down the front opening for a false insert, or whatever you want to call it. Make it look like it's entirely fur-lined.

Then I think back to the annoyance it was working with the fur. I'd have to cut it up into narrow strips, I'd have to stitch it on by hand, I'd have little tufts of fur flying all around in addition to the dust my wool gives off. Ugh. Plus, I think about the weight and size of the finished garment. I mean, this mink fur is kind of heavy, and also quite bulky. I think if I used something like rabbit, much thinner pelts, it might be closer to something wearable and packable. Right now, the pile of fabric that is the ropa-to-be is not very bulky nor unmanageable. I like that. And the wool ontop of whatever16th C outfit I wear is probably going to be plenty enough to keep me warm. ... Right? Right.

Yeah, I also sold two metres of fine white linen at sewing circle. Chances are I can sell the remaining two metres as well next sewing circle. This money could then be transformed into all the silk I need to line the sleeves and collar and make picadills (is it picadills, pickadils, piccadills... who knows). The amazing morphing power of Linen to Silk! W00t!

Whoops

So, while spreading the first of my ropa's side-seams open and stitching that down I thought, wouldn't it look better if I just overstitched along the seam as well? Tried it, and yes, it did look much better.
A lot of rambling )

Right, I'm sure that made no sense and was intensely boring for everyone, but I work things out while I type and it feels wrong to type all this up and then just trash it.

I signed up for Visby. Even signed up to sit guard twice. Now I have to pay the fee, book ferry, arrange transport, fix tent and finish my garb! :)
