  1. Linen hose
  2. Wool hose. At this point I don't care - I'll be making them on the machine. They are too boring.
  3. Padded pouch in which to camouflage the camera. A single layer of indeterminate grey fabric won't do.
  4. Limit upon self to only bring feast gear that will actually get use. As it was I brought more than I needed and still left the balance at home. This may be solved by selling the extras.
  5. Silk veiling. Not that linen is bad, I've got fairly flowy linen. Still - silk.
  6. Leather shoes for the pattens. I got the leather for uppers, now I just need a pair of soles.
  7. Proper length belt. I bought 1.8 metres of tan leather strap that I intend for this purpose - now I need the fittings for it.
  8. (Not necessarily camping) Ruling fork for calligraphy. A two-pronged fork out of bone with a fixed width with which to measure out and score the page where calligraphy goes. It's period, it's nifty, it's cute, it's practical, it's fast --- there is no way I'm not getting it at some point. Distances that would be useful: 4 mm,  5 mm, 6 mm.
  9. Food knife. I have a knife that I've been using now, and it is sharp and it is cute, and it was a gift, but it is not te proper shape for the usage. It's short and stubby, whereas foodknives in period were long and slender. Also, my little fork is a little too little. I think I want another one. My spoon on the other hand is perfect.
  10. Slumming garb. Simple pull-over garb that is still attractive. Look for another post on this in the near future.
  11. Shorter carrying strap on the wax-tablet pouch. Yes, it has its own pouch made from the same fabric as the plum wool gown. This wasn't the purpose it had from the start, but it has become its purpose. Anyway, shorter strap, I can't carry it over the shoulder because the strap rubs me raw, and hanging it at full length from the belt gives me bruises on the shins :P

All together Medieval Week in Visby (MTV) was great. The market had plenty of stalls to linger over, the fighting was fun, the garb we saw was awesome (with the usual exceptions) and the camp was cozy. The weather was also spectacularily fine all week long. I think I saw three drops of rain the entire time. Bad for people who were counting on lighting fires to cook on, but didn't much bother me in that way - rather I got much more of a tan than I've ever had.

The only bad experience I had was on the Wednesday afternoon/evening. Not quite enough sleep, not quite enough food, way too much sun and exposure, possibly not enough water, definitely not enough privacy for a long long time, plus that time of the month meant that at the end of the day I was a wreck. When I got back to camp I flopped down in the shade and panted for about fifteen minutes. Thankfully my friends are good to me and we went swimming in the ocean. It was fantastically refreshing and I enjoyed every second of it. Except possibly for the last minute when I had to get out of the deep water because I was feeling dizzy.

The fighting was fun because I could see more of what people were doing. I still don't see and understand all that much though, but I'm learning.

I didn't buy that much at the market. Some cheap leather for shoe uppers, a length of leather to make a belt, a piece of leather thong for tying a pouch, a pretty 1400-ish glass, 4 bronze veil pins, a cheap pottery mug and around 2.5 metres of 300 SKR/metre brown wool at less than half price. I haven't measured it properly yet, but I think I can get a simple short-sleeved GFD out of it. I nearly bought some bronze fittings, buckle and belt end, for the belt as well, but refrained - I have a number of smaller silver coloured fittings that I would like to use up somehow - not sure how it would look to mix and match.

It was again quite nice to have pattens. It didn't need it as much as at Double Wars, because there was no muck, but still it was uncomplicated to walk in them and it looked the business, and sounded very cool. I felt all spiff when I wore them. I did have to add some emergency ties to my wool slippers that I wear with them - the opening is a little too big and they've stretched a little, so I simply stitched in a narrow satin tape around the opening and tied them on. That held them beautifully. I was extra glad that I wore them and went to the extra effort to do my hair with braid and veiling on Wednesday as I was asked by Lord Erik Drake to be his consort for the Visby tournament. That was fun, and [livejournal.com profile] frualeydis got some nice photos of that for me.

I can not thank Helwig and Johann enough for all they did for me this week and previously. I have plans to make an attempt, but really, I can not thank them enough. They are good people and I couldn't have gone to Visby without them, nor would I have looked as good if it weren't for the sewing circle, run by Helwig and generously hosted at their place.
