AUGH!

Pants. I bled on my collar while outlining the embroidery (it's gone quickly) and before continuing I wanted to make it a little crisper.

So I plugged in the iron.

I spritzed the embroidery.

I twiddled my fingers while the iron got nice and hot.

Then I applied heat, plentiful heat onto my white linen collar, previously stained with my blood.

Then I did it some more, on front and back.

And then I picked it up and went AUGH!

So... any suggestions how to get out bloodspots, set with moisture and heat?

Try using your saliva - rub it into the stain real good. Rinse, repeat. Also, might try hydrogen peroxide.

*nods*

It's weird how it works, but it does. One's own blood is best broken down with one's own saliva. There is some sort of enzyme in the saliva that does it.

Have you ever thought naughty thoughts while chewing gum? The gum breaks down into a stringy mess in a couple of chews. Enzymes, interesting stuff, that.

Nasty thoughts make gum break down? Wow! How marvellously interesting. (I do mean that without sarcasm).

Thanks for the advice! I think I will follow it.

I was going to say spit on it or suck on it, but saliva I'll agree with. Hydrogen peroxide sometimes leaves a stain of its own, but it'll work in most cases. But not as well as spit.

Well, the third endorsement for spit has me leaning strongly in that direction :P Thanks!

It always sounds so harsh to use bleach - I'm gonna go with spit first!

Hmm, yes, but it's not in my hand, or - as in the case of spit - in my mouth and ready to be used now! I'm gonna try that first. Thanks, though.

cold water is generally best for blood

Yes.. but I already set it with heat... I'm gonna try saliva and see how that goes - three people recommend it, so it can't be all hogwash!

Is it possible to remake the pattern slightly and embroider over the bit with blood if worst comes to worst and it won't all go out?

Hmm, no I don't think so. It would be way to annoying to re-do the bit I got bloody. In that case I think I'd probably start over with a new piece of linen.

But I'll see what my saliva will do to it - it might work yet - and the spots are not very large.

Thanks for the thought!

the stain is caused by the iron content in the blood, so maybe a polutice with some complex like EDTA could work?

enzymes would not be a bad try either, although i am not sure it really defeat a set stain. most washing powders have good enzymes in them too.

bleach may take out the stain but is bad for the embroidery and the fabric.
