Started trying to mount my needlebook to some carboard and folding in my waste linen around it. Great fat failure there. It's half-done at this point, and looks like crap. Not happy. Maybe it's the spine of the embroidery that is too small, too narrow. The cardboard is apparently too thick, and the fabric folded in around it makes it too fat all around.

:(

Should I, like, do the embroidery in two parts? A front and a back. Mounted separately and attached in some other fancy manner in the centre.

Crapweasels.

7 pm. Made a pattern for and cut out toile of an effigy corset. I dunno, might be all wierd. Check it out.

Pretty heinous fabric for this purpose (large fruits and vegs on it) but it's sturdy enough. I tried it on and at this point it closes without any effort at all on me. I might have to take it in a little, but then adding boning channels will take up some of the width.

I used "väskvlieseline".. it's harder but thin enough :)

Hmm. Yeah, mebbe try something like that in future. It sucks though, I've ruined a perfectly good piece of embroidery :(

I think you need to make it smaller. Depending on what kind of boning you plan to use and if you plan to make it fully boned of course. Still, if you can close it comfortably now you probably should take it in a couple of centimetres. Especially if you're using linen and not cotton or silk, because linen stretches.

Yeah, you're probably right. I'll be using the remnant of "draglakan" I bought at ÖB. I found some in a hidden stash while I was tearing my room apart.

I'll try to use the hemp rope I bought in Visby for boning as well. Will have to work out some way to thread them through the channels - that'll be interesting :)

I used a piece of metal wire with a loop in the end. I first put the wire through the channel, which was open in both ends, put the hemp cord through the loop and then pulled it through the channel. Easy.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE heinous-fabric'd undies. This is why all my panties are vile orange, pink and purple. They're a secret joke I'm having on the rest of the world; I smile randomly during the day and don't explain...

Um. I think this may be oversharing?

No, no. Now, if I meet you and I see you smiling without proper reason I shall not be paranoid that you are mocking me in your head - rather I shall take it to mean that you're pondering your unmentionables.

At least, I think this is a good thing.

Oh, and also, I needed a bit of a giggle on this day of suck. Thanks.

Aah, I seem to remember you mentioning something of the kind at some point before. In any case, that sounds like a pretty good strategy. I have wire, and I'm not afraid to use it! Thanks for the tip.

Just a thought on the corset size. In my experience it's actually better to make the corset so that you have a 3-4 cm gap in the back when it's as tight as you want it. Otherwise you won't be able to use it if you happen to lose weight for some reason and it's much easier to get a perfect tight fit if you don't ever have to overlap it in the back.

Well, maybe. I'm not all convinced. The point of a corset is to create the proper shape for the body underneath. And then ontop of that you fit your clothes. What that means is you want the corset to tighten to the same "notch" at each wearing, because the dress ontop was made to fit that size and no other.

Now, a corset can, and possibly will, stretch a little, in which case it's a good thing to have a bit of a gap. So in that respect I think I'd want it to have a bit of a gap.

You could say that making a corset a little too little is a good thing if you change size, but I'm not planning on getting any smaller. And even if I did I'd have to remake the clothes to fit the new smaller me.

For the effigy corset the point is also that it closes in front, making it easier for me to get into and out of on my own, but the same principle is involved so we won't quibble about that :)

I am worried though, that a large gap in front will show up as a furrow in the gown ontop. Well, a large gap in back might do the same, I dunno.

I definately do need to take in this pattern. I'm also considering changing the angle of the seams, so that the bottom of the back piece is narrower. We'll see how it goes.

As I have no experience in front laced corsets I can't tell you if the gap shows. It generally doesn't when in the back.
I don't generally wear late period clothes to events, to much hassle, but I do renaissance dancing and I need to be able to move quite vigorously so it's possible that my demands on my corsets differ from yours.
I have no trouble getting my back laced corset on myself. I have ridiculously long laces and lace it up,loosely, crawl into it and tighten the laces by pulling at the ends of said silly laces. It does work for me :)
