liadethorneggeToday was the day for the Second Annual Aros St Erik Pilgrimage. Phew, that was a mouthful.
To make a long walk short , we met up outside Uppsala Cathedral, was photographed by a bus-load of Danish tourists who wanted to know what brand of wierdos we were and then we headed for Old Uppsala. The sun was with us the entire time, roasting us not-so-slowly, and the walk took about two hours. There were four of us (myself, Helwig, UlfR and Brianag), plus two kids (Ylva and Ask) on the walk, and once at the picknick spot, Karna joined us with her son.
I had packed most of a loaf of fresh bread, a wedge of brie cheese and sliced salami. I shared this with Helwig who had brought one pitifully small rye sandwich with a slice of cheese on it.
And then I thought it would be a good idea to walk home from Helwig's place after Johann had picked us up from Old Uppsala. I didn't think it was such a brilliant idea once I got home, but I made it. So, three hours walking in the sun today. My forearms, bared because I rolled up my shirt-sleeves, are a bit pink now.
Ah yes, wardrobe, I ended up wearing my new shirt, and the surcote lining kirtle on top of that, plus a coif, my apron and a borrowed straw hat which Helwig kindly brought for me to use. Plus my shorter woolen stockings and my Tudor shoes. Speaking of the apron, it's got to go - the colour is blotchy, and it's salmon pink to begin with, and there's a permanent black stain on the lower edge. How hard can it be to make a rectangular piece of linen and hem it all around?
There was another group of well-dressed people out at the old kings' mounds. We aren't sure if they were Nordrike, or one of the LARP groups, but they looked to be packed for a picknick in the open not unlike us.
Now, I am beat. I took pictures, but not many turned out, the light was harsh. Not sure when I'll post them, but, you know I'll let you know. When have I ever not let you know?
