What's the job of a peer, or in particular Laurel?
Quote from the Drachenwald Laurel website, the points taken from corpora.

  • To set an example of courtesy and chivalrous conduct.
  • To respect the Crown of the kingdom; to support and uphold the laws of the kingdom and Corpora.
  • If in fealty, to support and uphold the Crown of his or her kingdom.
  • To enrich the kingdom by sharing his or her knowledge and skills.
  • To advise the Crown on the advancement of candidates for the Laurel

What does that mean? It means that we look at candidates in the Kingdom and are expected to have an opinion on their readiness to become peers. This means looking at their prowess in their chosen field (art, combat, service). We look at their body of work. We look at how well rounded they are and how well they have upheld the ideals of the society thus far. We look at how they behave and interact with other members. We look at how and what they have enriched the game by sharing/teaching knowledge and skills.

The point I highlighted from Duke Timmur's interview about never polling Abstain goes to this. If you are not familiar with an individual and they get brought up for polling - that is your cue to find out about them, because the job as listed in corpora is just that.

Drachenwald is a large kingdom geographically, but not very large in numbers. If you never get to know anyone besides your local group, can you do the job of a peer?

Do you want to?

It is perfectly fine to be a great person, a wonderful artisan and not want the job.

(There are all sorts of caveats, moving in from another kingdom, becoming inactive due to life etc.)

What do you consider "your local group" as used in this post? It took some years after moving here, but now am really good with knowing people in norra Nordmark, and also know a fair few folk across the rest of Nordmark and in Aarnimetsä, but, other than the ones who are active in the Drachenwald Slack channel, am not so good at matching names to faces in ID or mainland Europe, and have no idea who is playing in Russia or South Africa.

I like the approach. In fact, hasn't there been Covid19 that was on my agenda for 2020/2021: visiting smaller events in far away regions in order to have time to get to know the people there and the culture.
And I actually wrote down the "never abstain" idea. I like how this forces people to get to know their fellow players. Even if not in person, because of travel restrictions etc., one can still try to see what the others are doing, thinking etc.
