liadethorneggeToday I basted together the half-lining and the dress panels. I'll be flat-lining it - ie treating both layers as one. I just have to hem the lower cut off bit of the lining to prevent unravelling. The pile of fabric so far feels substantial enough, and feel like linen, but still quite light. Not like the plum GFD which actually weighs much more. Hopefully that will be an indication of the future for this one.
I am also almost entirely resolved to make buttoned sleeves for this dress. It just needs careful thinking through so I'll be able to finish the edges off nicely. Wouldn't want to end up in a situation where I have to flip the seam allowance completely the other way in order to make it neat. My thoughts are running along the tangent of bag-lining the sleeves instead. Make them up ready for turning, turn, and then the outside seam just needs whipstitched together to the elbow and I can add buttons and buttoneholes from there. I will need to fit the sleeves a bit though, because with buttons I can make them much more fitted than the pattern is at the moment.
Wonder what to do for buttons. I could make them out of self-fabric, but they might end up a bit small. Might stuff them. Or might buy some - although this is meant to be a non-flash dress, so metal buttons don't quite fit the profile.
In other news, I moved over all my silk thread to the sewing supplies pouch, leaving all cotton and poly spools in the hideous green crocheted thing I've used for all my threads thus far. The linen thread I have in its own small paper bag along with the medallion of beeswax.
Let's see if I make any more progress today - although the general apathy has yet to lift...
