Handsewing
2004-04-29 11:27 amWell, I've gotten the corset out and yesterday spent half an hour or so filing down the cut edges of the cable ties that I use as the boning in the corset. The filing was done with a regular sandpaper file, and it worked like a charm - no more sharp edges to cut through the fabric which will hopefully extend the life of the garment.
I also started on attaching the bias tape over the top edge, to finish it off and seal the boning inside their channels and I have to say I got into quite the groove of handsewing. I really really liked it and I did not want to stop. It all just kind of flowed. I stitched down the band with invisible overcasting stitches on one side - I got about halfway and in between each channel I went through to the backside and took a tacking stitch so I could remove the pins.
This sewing thing has given me bloodied tooth: Meaning I like it and am starting to get addicted! (At least when things are going my way.) I even did the eyelets on my Tudor bodice and liked it. Maybe that is putting it a bit strongly, but they went fast and they turned out -very- nicelooking aside from one or two that were a bit lopsided.
Watching Lady Helwig do her eyelets though, put me to shame. She just flies through making them it's quite a sight to see!
Next step on my gown is attaching the sleeves. More handsewing which I might get some headway on tomorrow. [Tomorrow being the Last of April everyone in Uppsala is all exuberant and nobody connected to the University is going to be working. It's tbe biggest partyday of the year here, and that's saying something. ] So anyway, attaching sleeves, which will be another handsewing task, and then on that I'll be making the fur-lined turnback sleeves out of real mink fur. Oh yes, they are going to be sumptuous, and probably very warm.
The panels for the skirt are sewn up with linen/cotton lining and await the cartridge pleating, I think I will beg the proper thread for it at the sewing circle on saturday, since that should be a relatively simple task - large running stitches in two parallell lines half an inch apart, half an inch from the top.
I've gotten pattern suggestions for the turnbacks, and have the fur (mink) and fabric (blue cotton/linen) for the sleeves, I have the corset done, I have the bodice done, I have fabric for the forepart and the undersleeves (red curtain fabric) with pouffy chemise sleeves (more white linen) and then there's only the jewelery left to do! Oh an a French Hood. Gosh.. lots of things on my list.
