wait, spandex - do you mean the elastic? Would that die if you dyed them? No, I wouldn't think so. It might not take the colour as the wool, but you wouldn't treat the socks any worse while dyeing than in a regular wash... right?
All the wool dyestuffs I've seen need near-boiling temperatures to bind properly to the fibre. You can't allow it to boil of course or it'll felt, but you need to get it pretty hot. I have no idea if elastic can take that or not. And btw, I hope you don't believe I don't like the look of the undyed socks - it's just one of those things that look good only on other people.
Aah - well, as I said, I never tried dyeing anything ever so I'm sure you're right.
As far as not liking the colour - I don't mind one bit that you're not fond of it. I don't like pink for the most part, that's not a personal comment on anyone :)
