The woes of no regular scriptoriums
2004-10-29 06:54 pmI ought to get back to working on my scribal stuff somewhat regularly. It was so great to have every other saturday for that, but the hostess got preggers and now she doesn't want to host it anymore. She may resurrect it in a new form, like grand scriptoriums over a weekend once every six months. This is great, except I know I will slip back to beginner level in the time between if I don't do anything at home.
My problem at home is that I have no space to leave the stuff set up, so it's a great big task just to pull everything out, set up and then I might start doing something. It is a matter of thresholds.
I suppose I shouldn't complain about lack of regularly hosted scriptoriums if I don't pony up myself, but you see the problem with me hosting is that I live in a twelve person dorm. The times people have to come over here and do illumination is week-nights five to ten which is also when all the kids are here in the dorm and running in and out of the kitchen. And since I have only two chairs and no desk free for scribal use, it would have to mean us sitting in the kitchen. How much fun is that on a scale? And how much can you concentrate in the general thoroughfare of a twelve person dorm? Right. So I really can't do anything but moan.
I bring it up every now and again at Tuesday lectures, and we have one other lady of the shire who was -just- getting started with scribal stuff when the former hostess shut the bi-weekly scriptorium down. This other lady does have an actual apartment of her own, relatively central, living on her own. But I doubt anything will happen at her place.
So, I guess I'm stuck with having to do it myself. Where it comes back to thresholds. Maybe if I rearranged my furniture, put the desk in the middle of the room and used it from both sides, moving the stereo somewhere else... but then where would the daybed go? I have no space either, apart from no desk-surface and chairs.

illumination & pigments
Date: 2004-11-01 12:05 pm (UTC)well, if you ever feel like coming down to sthlm to play around a bit with ink and pigments, please feel free to drop me a line!
i've been looking around to find some scribal friends in the area since i moved to sthlm 3 years ago, although not whole heartedly since i usually been finding myself quite busy with work...
but would be more than happy to find a few scibal firends to continue my explorations every now and again, in ink & pigment manufacture, gilding and all sorts of calligraphy and illumination! have been giving some sort of workshop and lectures in this matter a couple of times, and it is just so much more fun experimenting with other people than just fiddling around all by your self!
although i recently got hooked again on knitting, i do miss the calligraphy/illuminating business, and when i finally got around to contact aros scriptorium, you had already stopped the regular scriptorium meetings...

Re: illumination & pigments
Date: 2004-11-01 01:26 pm (UTC)My problem with that is only that it costs much more to get to Stockholm than hop on my bike here in town. Although I might sometimes be able to. It's just a little annoying and frustrating, because we are at least six people who do scrolls and such here and nowhere to do it. One already hosts sewing circle, another lives out in the boonies, etc.
Although it sounds interesting! Gro has promised to resurrect some sort of scriptorium-activity, probably weekend-long things. Maybe something like that you were thinking as well?
Re: illumination & pigments
Date: 2004-11-02 01:03 am (UTC)yes, more or less. i don't think i should comitt my self for any regular activities. however, i do have a small apartment with a small kitchen, which could possibly host up to 3-4 participants (with a tight squeeze) for laboratory work. for calligraphy sessions one might be able to squeeze in one or two more with a minor rearrangement in the sitting room.
there are a couple of laboratory things i would like to explore some more: inorganic salt pigments, gesso and gilding, and sizing of fabrics for tempera paintings.
then some further research and tests of illumination techniques as described in the treatesis.
so maybe there are a few of you willing to come down once or twice per semester and play with me? since it is quite a lot of things to pack and organise for the laboratory work it is somewhat easier to arrange a session in stockholm?
for less messy activities i could probably always come to uppsala, you do have a wonderful yarn store...
so if any of you are interested, do let me know. i would love to play some more!
