I eventually managed to upload an album of photos of the progess of Filippa's black and white coif. It's not even a tenth of the number of photos I have of it and its inspiration.

Still, shows the progress: https://picasaweb.google.com/107008157819245320875/MetalThreadEmbroideredCoif

Those are amazing. A coif like that is on my list "to do". Someday. ;) How exactly does it go together. When its still flat, one edge shows a lace edging, but when it is on her...highness'(?) head, I don't see one. Is the lace on the neck edge then?

Her Excellency. She's a viscountess.

Anyway, It is basically laced together through the edge stitches at the top. The front third at least. The back third of the top seam is gathered with a silk fingerloop cord I provided. The nape is also gathered with a silk fingerloop cord through the buttonhole bars. I just went through and added captions. I haven't got a good shot of the top of the coif though. Or maybe just the one. I'll see if I can upload that too.

Hmm, actually second to last picture in the album shows the top fairly well, but it's not a close-up of the join. Basically I just ran a silk thread back and forth, like whipstitches, through the edge stitching.

This is just glorious.

Is it stem stitch? backstitch? for outlines?

I'm doing my first, very basic, blackwork in over 10 years, for some cuffs, using waste canvas. It's as repetitive as I remember! But I'm using double running stitch, whereas I don't see any running stitch here.

the black is outlined in stemstitch. No double running anywhere to be found here, you're right :)

Oh Lia, that is really stunning! I am so envious of your embroidery, especially these coifs. I want to make one but I know I will start it and never finish it. I just love the braided stitch you use on the stems.

Thanks :)

The main stitch on the stems is ceylon stitch. Fairly simple to work up - honestly. Just takes time.
