What experience teaches me...
Green finished, black vines started. (19 Jan)

...is that the next time I start on one of these projects I wait to do the background until last. Because if you do it first, you get those unsightly white gaps when the vines need to turn corners. Or when the space you've left is too wide to be covered up by a single row of chain stitches. This time I'm glad it is my own needlebook that I started with, because I wouldn't want to give this away to someone.

Does it have to be a single row of chain, or can you add an unobtrusive stem stitch in there to make it less obvious?

Well, It doesn't need it all over, only in a very few places. I don't think it'd look good to have the vines bubble out larger in those few places.

I dunno. I could try I suppose. There's not alot of contrast between the black and green, so I might get away with it.

Thanks :) I do like how the brick stitch comes out in any sort of coherent area. Like the spine of my little needlebook. Of course, it also does best if I do the design on a counted-stitch basis. Many lines in there are straight and since I'm crap at making my stitches even, I only manage it when I can count threads :/

Anyway. If I were better at free-form embroidery that wouldn't be a problem. The tiny fiddly areas get a bit uneven in comparison.

Anyway, thank you. A quick look from a bit of a distance doesn't show up my mistakes, so I'll be able to use it still. Just have to finish it first :)

Do some touch-ups in green around the vines. A little work with fastening the thread but you will be able to cover most of the white spots. It looks nice in the picture. I look forward to see it finished.

Hmm, may have to do green touch-ups in any case. The first half I did turned out a bit odd in a few places. Not sure why.

Thanks!

I think it's fab. You may not think it's good enough to give away, but I'd be thrilled to receive something of this quality, so I reckon you're putting yourself down too much.

Why not fill the (small) gaps with stemstitch in the green? Shouldn't be very noticable.

its your needle book, but if you're really not pleased with the look: how about a little bit cheating - if you outline with stem stitch you will get better looking corners

just my 5cents from Austria ;)

PS: who really cares about small mistakes except the artist ? ;)

True - I'm probably the only one that spots the mistakes. Still, I want it to be perfect!
