Somebody needs to save me from myself ... only I thought to myself, wouldn't it be grand to actually -do- an embroidered linen Elizabethan jacket? You know, I could line it in a nice thin wool and it'll be really quite warm. Most of it is some form of braided stitch, detached buttonhole and stem stitch (I believe)

But an entire jacket? That's front panel, back panel, gores, sleeves (two of them!) and I have definitely got limited amounts of patience with embroidery, and even more definitely not the budget to do it in silk embroidery floss.

But wouldn't it be grand? And those types of jackets are really quite short, and Racaire and Anya's second embroidery challenge runs for an entire year. I could possibly do it in that time. If I work at it.

Oh no... the agony, the indecision, the insanity!

I say go for it! Just think of how lovely you will look after it is finished and the sense of accomplishment it will bring. :) Plus, the cold weather is coming soon and it will give you a nice project to work on.

You people are no help at all.

Don't you realize I'd have to do the pattern once as a proper working mock-up before I commit to embroidering one whole jacket?

No help! Although, alternately, lots of help, because if I want to embroider one of these jackets, I really should make one up entirely out of something else, so I know if the pattern works. Oooooh, shiny!

BTW, i'm taking the embroidery course at HV-skolan this year and it is going to be so much fun to learn how to explore stitches in a more experimental way!!!

As mentioned before, I need help containing my insanity, not fans to the fire! IIIH! Although it would be pretty amazing...

An embroidery course? Sounds like fun, you must post updates on what you do!

Of course you want to do an embroidered linen jacket. Have you seen the blog at Plimoth Plantation? (http://www.plimoth.org/embroidery-blog/)

Have you learn the plaited braid stitch? The only place I've found instructions is at Leon Conrad's site except he doesn't have all the instructions there. Do you have instructions because if you do, I would love to see them as this is a stitch I am trying to figure out.

And you didn't really expect any of us to say not to make it did you?

Oooh! I have not seen that blog! What an awesome place. I must peruse in detail.

I've not learned the plaited braid stitch as yet, but I have a handout detailing how it should be done. I can send it on to you just as soon as I locate it.

And, err, weelll.... OK, since you ask, no, I didn't really expect you to tell me not to do it.

I am coming over all faint with the different kinds of embroidery stitch guides they have there on that site! Wowza!

I just sent you an email, hope it's to the right address, did not attach file yet. Awaiting your reply.

Now, I must drag out a bit of linen and my DMC floss and try all those gorgeous stitches out! wheeee!

I know - its a lovely site isn't it?? They have some really good photos of the pattern of the jacket as well!

Not received any email yet though. Did you send it to the myladysw AT myladyswardrobe DOT com email?

Oh, one thing I have found is a tight button twist silk is better for detached button hole stitch as per the jacket embroideries rather than floss but its really personal preference.

You may or may not be familiar with this site:
http://www.extremecostuming.com/reproductions/themaidstonejacket.html

This jacket will either inspire you or disuade you. Somehow, I think it will do the former :-)

I was aware, but it was a while ago I read that particular page. *ponders* Some good ideas there, definitely. I think I'll try the assembly method she describes for my mock-up jacket, never tried that with gores before, but I suppose it should work...

Although an insane amount of hours went into that, it just goes to show that people -can- do an entire jacket themselves. Shows I could do it, if my patience doesn't run out :)
