In the end the temptation grew too big to resist. I've now cut out the body parts of a new 15th C dress, using my fitted pattern. I cut it in four panels, flaring out at sides and centre front and back. This took 310 cm of fabric, leaving me enough on the side of the bodice section of my cuts to lay out my sleeves alongside. This is excellent! I can, if needed, get away with 3 metres for an entire dress with sleeves. Awesome to know.

I've not yet cut out the sleeves, I only just folded out the oddly shaped piece left over from cutting the body panels and tested my pattern over it. No problem fitting it on there. Before I can cut out the sleeves however, I must iron the fabric as the crease at the centre line is a bit too pronounced to play nicely.

Also, cutting this linen is an absolute dream.

Genevieve, and I love wool.

"Hi Genevieve, welcome..."

Did I mention I'm going shopping in my favourite London fabric stores tomorrow with a keen newbie Saxon-to-be?

Lead me not to temptation, I can find it myself, thanks.

Hee :) You know, when I wrote that I thought about adding a note about wool not being all bad, but don't worry, wool will get its due share of costumer love.

So, what you are saying is, next time I am in London and feel like I want to fondle some fabric, you are the woman to talk to about places to go? :)

I'd be happy to take you, but you can also look at the summary on the Thamesreach visitors' pages:

http://www.thamesreach.org/shopping.htm

I was in Shepherd's Bush (listed on the website) today, and dropped...oh dear, quite a lot on two pieces of linen in plum and in pale green (I'm splitting the 8m plum one with Siban), and on a piece of silk that is hard to describe.

It's cream, heavier than fine silk, has a twill weave, is less stiff than silk taffeta (that you make wedding dresses from), and I think will drape beautifully, though I'm not sure what to do with it. I was simply spellbound by it!

The newbie came away very well equipped - off-white linen for an undertunic, and a beautiful light grassy green herringbone weave wool for an overtunic. Very splendid. I was sorely tempted by the green wool, but I already have more fabric than I know what to do with.

I'm thinking of holding a fabric swap at Lammas: bring out all those wonderful things that you are hoarding, but you've never done anything with, but that you absolutely cannot throw out. Trade/sell to others in similar circumstances - a bit like a car boot sale or a yard sale, but only for fabric and accessories...

What an excellent resource! Wow, I'm of a mind to steal it for the redesign of Aros' homepage in fact. I just have to collect some cool stuff for people to do while in Uppsala and publish it.

Fabric swapping - yes, good idea. The danger is, of course, coming home with more fabric than you took with you, just so you know :)
